AWDAL-SALAL REFERENDUM 2008

In November 2008, we (awdalian and Salalian) need a referendum to ask voters in the Somaliland provinces of AWDAL and SALAL whether AWDAL-SALAL should secede from Somaliland and become an independent state (Republic of AWDAL), through the question “Do you agree that AWDAL-SALAL should become sovereign after having made a formal offer to Somaliland for a new economic and political partnership within the scope of the bill respecting the future of AWDAL-SALAL and of the agreement signed on May 12, 1991 ?”.

It is hard to believe that the people of Hargeisa seventeen years after the break away still don’t get it. The simple meaning of confederacy has become a rocket science to the people of Hargeisa. It has become too difficult for the people in the capital of Somaliland to understand the fact that the nation was formed in confederacy. A confederacy of tribes united by a league based on understanding, caring and sharing with a vision of nation building and advancement.

Pioneering US heart surgeon dies

Dr Michael DeBakey, the pioneering heart surgeon who gained fame for his procedures developing bypass surgery, has died at the age of 99. The surgeon died on Friday night from natural causes at Houston’s Methodist Hospital, officials said. When he underwent surgery two years ago for a damaged aorta, his treatment used a procedure he had developed. Dr DeBakey’s patient list included a number of world leaders and international celebrities. “Dr DeBakey’s reputation brought many people into this institution, and he treated them all: heads of state, entertainers, businessmen and presidents, as well as people with no titles and no means,” said Ron Girotto, president of the Methodist Hospital System.
